Blood in Sputum

Blood in sputum, also known as hemoptysis, is the presence of blood when coughing up mucus or phlegm. It can appear as streaks or in larger amounts and may be caused by various conditions, ranging from minor issues like throat irritation or bronchitis to more serious problems such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, lung cancer or a blood clot in the lungs.
